Week 3 Assignment: Surface Design / Mosaic

First I reduced the opacity of the image and locked it in place, then I started with the basic shapes of the circles and the rectangular shape of the frame.

Because the photo isn't straight on, and the pattern isn't completely symmetrical I created some intersecting grid lines to work with as framework for my pattern.

I used curves for more of the basic shapes.

I took the quarter of the pattern that I designed and mirrored it horizontally then vertically.

then I started to use OFFSET to add the thickness to the frame. This ended up taking a while... I wasn't sure how to offset everything at once.

I got tired of trying and instead used OFFSET on a quarter of the design, cleaned it up with trim and then separated it from the rest of the design.

With my selection separated I made sure to clean it up in the ways I wanted before mirroring it again.

mirroring the full design I can see what it would look like as tiles.

When I removed the rectangular frame I had around it its less like a tile, but I like how the design blends into itself vertically. I also really like the negative space in the middle of the four quadrants.
